I can not sign into Messenger, I can not browse to nor ping http://msnbc.com or http://www.microsoft.com.

How bizarre, how bizarre.

It apparently was my PC (although a neighbor said he was having the same problems with MSN Messenger) or at least the net around my house, because from uptown everything works fine. So I rebooted by home PC and now I can't connect to it. I assume it is sitting there halfway shut down with a dialog box telling me that it failed to shut down explorer or SharpReader or something.
