Temp files and the broken Disk Cleanup Utility

Dave Winer is a little upset over some ancient Temp files so the world responds. After fielding the attacks, insults, and responses, Dave explains that Disk Cleanup hangs when he tries to run it. AH! Finally we get to the true problem: MS' defective cleanup tool. I had this problem for almost a year before I finally found the answer.

It is a known problem and the subject of not two MS KB articles:

812930 : Disk Cleanup Utility Stops Responding

and

812248 : Disk Cleanup Tool Stops Responding While Compressing Old Files

Please note, AFAIK, these 2 articles have the exact same solution: delete the "compress old files" option from the registry. Not the solution I wanted to see, but it worked like a charm.
