I gave the XP start menu a chance. More of a chance than most. I first installed Whistler Beta 1 right before Thanksgiving 2000. I don't remember if it had the new new Start Menu or not but I do know that I never used the Classic Start Menu in any of the Whistler/XP betas or on any installs of XP. Until now.

Sreedhar Koganti asks
We have many .Net languages now, then why we are end up having one more language (XAML)!! Are there any advantages we are going to have with this than other languages?? Any one has answer!!! If you have, please share with me!
I think one of the biggest advantages is the possibility for designers to create GUIs more easily. The phrase "that looks like a programmer made it" is not a compliment and I'll be the first to admit that it may be the only response I can guarant Read More...

This is another very handy site. Not everyone has an FTP site to upload files for their friends and sometimes hotmail's 1MB size limit just doesn't cut it. The site below will hold the file for 48 hours (and 48 hours only) and you can email the link out to everyone you want to send it to.
Go to Dropload and drop a load of bites with an email address, and it sends an email to the recipient to come pick up the load. Free and free of the limitations of email servers.

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one putting my day(s) off to good use.
My holiday so far has been spent playing with some toys/tools that I haven't previously had time to really sit down and give the effort needed. I have been able to finally check out the Frans' offerings: LLBLGen (the free, open source version and a demo of the Pro version). The Pro version is only a demo, so I couldn't really test it except for on the Northwind database, but it is Read More...

According to a story on ThinkSecret, new smaller iPods will be available soon with prices starting at $100. They hold less (2GB and 4GB) but that is plenty for me and the price is right. They will also be available in colors, as will the larger, “normal” iPods, but I really don't care about that at all, if it's ugly, I can put it under something. Size does matter, but the bottom line is that I can't rationalize paying more than a C-Note for a walkman.

I've always thought that “Anal” is the root of “Analyze” for good reason. And I've always thought that you have to be at least a little anal retentive to do good database work. But this still caught me off guard...

Jeff Key wants to end default buttons on Focus-Stealing Dialogs but I think the problem is bigger than that. I don't think ANYTHING should be able to steal my focus while typing. I have ranted about this before both in places where it could help (emails with MS employees) and in places where it can't (certain blogs). Not only is it annoying to suddenly find myself typing in a IM conversation with someone on AOL when less than half a word ago I was typing an invoice for a client, it is DANGEROUS Read More...

I am not an MS-hater. To the contrary, I make ever dollar of my income via an MS product in some shape or form. That doesn't mean I'm going to use an inferior browser, though, so there are very few cases where I use IE: when entering posts in this .Text blog (because the FreeTextBox is not cross-browser, I'll be replacing it in my installation with a better, cross-browser alternative when .Text .95 is released and implemented), when some lazy, uncaring web developer (like those at MSNBC.MSN.co Read More...

Looks like MS SQL Server will be the last of the databases to get "real" code running onboard natively...
Eric Herman and MySQL's Brian "Krow" Aker have released code to allow the DBMS MySQL to run Java natively inside of the database. The code allows users to write functions inside of the database that can be then used in SELECT/INSERT/UPDATE statements.

Richard Tallent Posted his IM info and turned me on to Gaim, then Corey Smith posted his MSN Messenger info (with a slick graphic button and everything) so I figured, why not? My MSN Messenger address ( iSirsha@hotmail.com) is to the left. I don't need to bother hiding the address because the email address doesn't actually work, it is only a passport account. Read More...

I try to keep a handle on the number of “locked” posts I have in SharpReader. At times, it gets up around 800 but, for some reason, I have decided that I must keep the number below 600. This means once a week or so I go through and unlock posts I locked because I needed to check on comments later or read later or just something I thought was going to be useful and now isn't (or was absorbed into “what I know”). Eventually I will get the locked feeds down to 580 or so and I feel better for so Read More...

I've been using Steve Shamrock's AND+FTP tool a lot recently. For a beta, it's extremely good. It has a single pop-up quickstart page that lays out the instructions step-by-step and works almost exactly like I wish VS.Net would now: you pick a project, set the FTP location, see what files are missing/different, choose the ones you want to upload, and you're done. It even has a “only files needed to run this project” setting so you don't upload resx or cs files, only aspx, dll, etc.

Dave doesn't get it. This hole is going to cause amazing amounts of trouble. The example he was shown was wrong.
This link takes you to a safe example.
The link on the next page looks like a link to the MS site IF you are using IE. When you click the fake link in my example, you will go to hotdogchili.com but the addressbar will say microsoft.com if you are using IE. You can email a spoofed link even easier if your prey uses Outlook Express.
If you know anyone using IE and/or OE, wa Read More...

Microsoft comes through with some great material sometimes. This might be one of those times. These samples not only cover a wide range of functionality, they help one of my favorite causes: making my job faster and easier.
All of these samples use the Visual Studio automation model, which is free and publicly distributed with Visual Studio.NET 2003. The Visual Studio .NET automation model is four to five times richer and more powerful than any automation model that shipped with a previous ve Read More...

if you install the free Infragistics WinForms Tracker reference application locally and want to play around with it without actually compiling the source yourselve, you'll eventually notice that you can't delete the preset data without uncommenting some parts of the code (the message boxes tell you this) and rebuilding the application. I didn't feel like doing that tonight (it's Friday!) so I did it all via SQL Query Analyzer.
Steps for this:
install client and server, confirm it works. Read More...

I've decided to start posting some playlists for Rhapsody users and a HUGE Christmas music playlist seems like a good place to start. With 1088 songs by artists from Xtina to the Chipmunks to Skynard to Satriani to Sinatra to a dozen artists you probably never knew recorded a Christmas album, I would suggest you play this in “random play” mode.
You'll need Rhapsody to play the music and I've left the advertisement on the bottom of the playlist for those who might want to try it out. The sub Read More...
