If you are one of the few who don't have Longhorn or one of the others who have it and decided it may not be worth the trouble at the moment or if you just want to play with XAML's declaritive programming model today on a stable platform that works, check out XAMLON.
I know XAMLON isn't new, but the newest version, 0.7 (beta 3) has just been released.
“This version adds support for MDI windows and Menus in your markup. Two new examples have been added to show examples on how to use these n Read More...

Okay, that was my bad name for the software bundle that James Avery suggests Microsoft should release.
If you want to get the anti-trust people off of your back, remove stuff like media player and movie maker from windows and offer it in a digital media add-on pack like iLife. It could include:
Windows Media Player
Windows Movie Maker (And make it not suck)
Windows Photo Something - Photo editing/management
Windows Music Something - Simple music editing
I think they should rem Read More...

InfoWorld says this new hole “Could be Devastating“.
I would have to agree. The last big bad hole is over a month old and still hasn't been patched. According to SCOBLE, the testing process takes a while, but Bill Gates claimed there was a 24 hour response time for security holes and the fact that a simple string replacement function is all that was needed makes me think that this current hole is going to wreak some havoc before it is patched.
The problem isn't with educated users, of cour Read More...

Slashdot has a post regarding the recent closing of the recently opened (and exclusive) “Social Network” site Orkut.
I assumed that the “affiliated with Google” label, the fact that the developers worked for Google and the fact that the shortcomings of the competitors are well known (and well documented) would mean that this site would not suffer from the crippling problems that make these places unreliable to unusable. I was wrong. Orkut was apparently designed with the exact same lack of Read More...

I am not the type of person who looks for things in movies. At least, I don't look for things the first time I see a movie and certainly not while seeing a movie for the first time in a theater. I usually check my brain at the door in order to get the most of the experience. Otherwise, I would never be able to justify the cost of a Coke and popcorn and most movies would be disappointing.
I don't notice microphones or shadows, usually. I dint' try to figure out who Rosebud is. I try t Read More...

http://www.Orkut.com is a new “social networking” site. I am currently a member of 2 of them and the thought of Orkut.com being “affiliated with Google” makes me think that this will probably be a replacement for both of them. Read More...

It doesn't seem real. I was washing dishes in a restaurant owned by the Panthers owner when he scored the franchise from the NFL. We've had 3/4 of a good team for a while. The first 3/4 of the game, that is. Last year I predicted that they would eventually learn to play the 4th quarter and it was going to be ON, I had no idea it was going to happen this early. SCOBLE wants to know... “If you could tell Steve to do something, what would it be?”
I started writing an answer and it turned out a little too long, so I posted it here: An Open Letter To Steve Ballmer.

I think most ASP.Net developers have a bit of a love/hate relationship with datagrids. It was love (lust, maybe?) at first site for most of us but that initial feeling quickly turned flaky and we began the nitpicking, complaining, arguing, and fighting that kills a relationship, but there was nothing better to release the datagrid, so we stuck it out. Many people tried to “fix” our Pygmalian datagrid, teaching it how to sort, how to have multiple lines in a row, even (eek) how to have children Read More...

Although I make every penny of my income from Microsoft products as a programmer, I do not use IE as my default browser. After your last move and revamp of the site, you have chosen to keep many features IE-only for no good reason. I have looked at the code and there is no reason for it other than incompetence on the part of the developers or something less innocent on the part of the managers. I know better than to believe any excuses you might have because the features you give me an "unsup Read More...

While taking out my trash a couple weeks ago, I saw a this monitor sitting by the recycle bins. It appeared to be clean, not even dusty, and the power cord was still attached. I removed the power cord and put it in my “spare connectors” drawer and took the next 2 days to decide whether or not I should bring the monitor in. It didn't look broken. But when does a monitor look broken? But the power cord was still on it. Anyone who would throw away a power cord was probably not going to be abl Read More...

A good article explaining what Open Source software is and the different types of lisences available. I see a lot of people talking about it and it seems that few (especially in the MS-centric world I live, work, and play in) really know what they're talking about. Hopefully this will help.

It's been a while, but Eric put HotDogChili on his resume so I needed to rush it back up... it was written mostly as my playground to do as much strange Flash 5 + JavaScript + Frames + XML + ASP Classic + MS SQL + XLST/XLST as possible. I basically decided to make as complicated a site as I could and then did it. Now I'm a coulpe ASP versions behind and a couple Flash versions behind and the whole thing needs to be re-done, but it still works, surprisingly enough.
