Not that it really matters to me, I don't have the $2000 required for entrance to the planned fundraising dinner tonight, but Bush was sceered to fly into Charlotte today, for good reason. It's snowed more today than it has all Winter and it isn't going to stop for another 6-12 hours. The only thing worse than getting stuck somewhere is getting stuck somewhere that is basically closed down with nothing to do.
While I'm in semi-political/local mode, I'm happy to see John Edwards doing so wel Read More...

Rick Smit thinks that Smart Clients will mean that he won't have to write Web Forms anymore.
If we're talking about intranet programming, I agree. For most web applications, though, I don't see smart clients as an alternative. In my experience, web apps are written as web apps for reasons that prevent smart clients from being substituted. Smart clients in addition to the web forms is my current usage, so that Windows users with up-to-date machines can use the smart client and the other hal Read More...

You should REALLY be listening to Richard Tallent. I seem to have the same thought at least once or twice a week while reading Richard's blog:
“man, I hope someone at Microsoft is reading this.”

This article on kuro5hin.org is written about Open Source software but I think it is just as relevant for any open, free, cheap, or gift software that we use.

BlogJet 's new release includes HTML editing. This is a good thing but I still can't post to multiple categories and there is still no spell check. This means that Blogjet isn't really the tool for me because I abuse multi-category and I look even dumber Read More...

Apple once said that 1984 wasn't going to be like 1984 but 1984 was 20 years ago. Oh how times have changed. Brian Flemming uses 2 Super Bowl commercials released a generation apart to show how Apple has turned from fighting Big Brother into being Big Brother. Well, not exactly “being”... “borrowing the tactics of” Big Brother. [via Lessig Blog]
Another thing to notice is that Brian has an older, probably original version of the 1984 commercial, not the one that Apple has on their site. T Read More...

Robert McLaws has announced the upcoming v2 release of ScrollingGrid. I've been using it for the internal administration area of a personal project and I'll admit that the “give 'em a little and get 'em hooked” approach worked. I'm hooked.
The second version will have a few “gold star” features that will make the product even better, but will have a higher price. Not that the price could get much lower than it already is. So grab the current version while you can and enjoy the free upgrade Read More...

Congratulations to Eric Sink for his great career-minded posts on his blog.
Congrats for the bookmark-worthy (print-worthy, even) articles on MSDN.
Congrats on getting those articles while developing and selling SourceGear Vault, a product that undeniably competes directly with Microsoft.
Congrats on filling the needs of developers everywhere with Vault, a product that replaces the Archilles Hill of Visual Studio developers: VSS.
Congrats on the success of that product, well-deserv Read More...

I've been using Steve Sharrock's ASP.Net FTP Deployment Tool (AND+FTP) for a while now (as I mentioned here) and it is now a requirement in my development evironment. Steve finally released the final version, if you work with ASP.Net and have both a development and live server, you probably NEED this tool. The functionality will be native in the next version of Visual Studio.Net, I think, but who can wait that long? Read More...

The back button fails to work a little too often for my tastes in the latest release of Mozilla's stand-alone browser. I would recommend waiting until the next point release if you think that "back" is an important function.
[update: I have not been able to reproduce the error after the initial 24 hours of installation. The machine that it was occuring on has since been formatted so I can't really test it any further, but neither of the other 2 machines I use Firefox on (one clean install, o Read More...

My main PC melted down last night so I am working from my test server at the moment. Running IE on a regular machine is bad enough but Win2k3 makes sure you know exactly how dangerous the web is, so I naturally went to http://Mozilla.org to download Firebird. To my surprise, they have changed the name again, but I think they picked a good one.
Introducing Firefox 0.8.
The icon has changed, again I think they did a good job with it. I was also pleased to see that they plan on keeping Read More...

GOOGLE is currently being sued over alleged trademark infringements. Not content to simply make the (laughable, IMO) case that allowing competitors to buy ads that are returned when their registered trademarks are entered, American Blinds and Wallpaper's lawyers claim that returning web search results that include competitors is also an infringement.

Crystal Reports hates me but it's okay, the feeling is mutual. Unfortunately, SQL Server Reporting Services will not replace Crystal Reports for any of my clients because it can not be deployed to the desktop and none of my clients have SQL Server licenses on their desktop machines, just a server or two. I think that MS did this so that it wouldn't completely put CR out of business and so that they could make it a free add-on. I can only imagine the anti-trust uproar if MS were to release a f Read More...

WOW. Oracle is now offering Oracle Standard Edition One under Named User Plus licensing for $149/user (minimum 5 users). That means $745 for 5 users; that is a GREAT deal.
I think Ken Brubaker may be right about a coming SQL Server price drop.
Thanks for tipping us off on that, Ken.

David Hill has written a nice article that may be useful as an introduction to /explanation of the idea of Smart Clients. I like to keep documentation like this around so that I can use it to get my ideas across to C-levels, non-techs, etc. Getting people to read is extremely hard at times but these types of articles still work as good crib sheets and/or allow me to help organize my thoughts on the subjects.
