The Joys of Installing SQL Reporting Services

Day 2 of installation on my web server:  SQL Server 2000.

Installing the server itself is a breeze, not that it was ever hard, but after doing it repeatedly the last 4 years, it's gotten to the point where I don't even read the dialogs anymore.  And then I tried to install SQL Server Reporting Services.

  • start install
  • click "okay" for component update, install required components.
  • click next
  • VS.NET isn't installed, is the ONLY result in the system prerequisites check.
  • click next
  • now setup starts, click next
  • registration info, click next
  • feature selection: look through the options, mark some "run all from my computer", some "not available", etc.  Nowhere near as bad as Office.
  • click next
  • choose service account, click next
  • choose root directory for Report Server and root for Report Manager.  Don't redirect the default Web home pge to the report manager, of course, this is a www server, not intranet.
  • uncheck "use ssl" because I don't have ssl set up yet...
  • specify account to run under, click next
  • THEN find out that you have to have SQL Server 2000 with SP3a.  Doesn't that fall under "required components" or "prerequisites"?  Yes, it does and that was over a dozen clicks ago.
  • So then I download SP3a (at 4.88KB/sec), try to install it.  No dice, I am told that I have to reboot because of a setup in progress.  grr.
  • Install sp3a.  cool, it doesn't tell me to reboot.
  • Try to install Reporting Services.
  • No dice, I apparently DID need to reboot.  grr
  • go through all of the steps listed above (almost all), then a few more to configure the mail server, etc.
  • "Setup is now installing Reporting Services. Installation may take several minutes."

hmmm.. you think?

I started this at 2:30... it is now 6:50.

but I am finished :)

These "no need to reboot" and "was kidding, you need to reboot" issues annoying. Even Sharepoint setup tells you to reboot after SP3A.
Hopefully you write some of your experiences with the Reporting Services. I hadn't time yet to install and play around with them...

I don't know of any other program that is this insistant on rebooting. Simply starting an install, getting to the first option and cancelling will cause SQL Server to refuse to install until you reboot.

The thing that bothered me the most was the 5 minutes or so where I went through the install wizard after it supposedly checked for requirements and prerequisites before it finally checked what is arguably requirement #1: SQL Server 2000 SP3a.

Oh well, it's a v1.0, I don't expect it to be perfect, but I can still wish...

Strange - didn't have one problem. Took no time and rebooted only once.

I had no problems at all installing SQL Reporting Services... but then again, I had downloaded and installed SQL2KSP3A before trying to install SQL Reporting Services.. because, yes, I had RTFM.
