My family has been here (Charlotte area, North Carolina) for a long time. Every July 4th, we gather at an aunt and uncle's house for a picnic with a large extended family. Though the family is my mom's side of the family, the house is only a few miles from where my dad's dad's dad's dad's [etc] first settled in the mid-late 1700's on a land grant
from King George. From the beginning, there was turmoil.
He had 2 sons that fought in the American Revolution. One fought for America. One fought for his King. For better or worse, the Tory son Frederick Hager, earned a place in history. He was serving as a guide for the British armies and according to some, probably shot and killed General Davidson on February 1, 1781 while crossing the Catawba River with General Cornwallis.
The story can be found online in “Death at Cowan's Ford“ [chapter 8 of “Hornet's Nest: The Story of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County”].
