Carolina.RR.Com Turns Up The Speed A Little More

After a couple (or few) weeks of annoying (at best) to disastrous (in the case of at least one friend of mine) network problems as Time Warner/Road Runner upgraded, tweaked, and otherwise cranked up their (our?) network, things seem to have finally settled down. My modem hasn't gone into random rebooting fits for days now, which is very nice because the Windows XP "your USB device was just unplugged" sound followed by "a new USB device was just plugged in" sound every few minutes gets old fast. Especially in the middle of the night or in the middle of working on something remotely. One friend thought his router needed a firmware update and was in the middle of installing a new version when the router rebooted itself again, completely hosing it, apparently.

But now things seem somewhat stable again and, though I don't have the advertised 5MB down speed, I can't complain.

What tool do you use for bandwidth speed tests? I usually use dslreports.com but have noticed their servers being bogged down quite a bit lately, though I've seen similar results.

+1 for the more upload speed, I think they are adverting ~384 now which is absolutely pathetic in comparison to the 5mb up.

For the last 5 or so years, I've usually used http://BandwidthPlace.com/speedtest
because I can remember the URL.

:)

They give higher numbers than the other tests quite often but the numbers are consistant and have usually been very close to what I consider accurate, even if a bit idealic. When I was on dial-up and DSL, the test would show very close to advertised speed and when that speed was bumped (and advertised), the test would reflect it. I haven't gotten much higher than 4MB/sec after RR claimed a 5MB down, but I still can't complain.
