My first experience building a website for mobile phones was in 2000 and my most recent was earlier this evening, so this looks like good news to me:
The W3C, or World Wide Web Consortium, on Wednesday announced its Mobile Web Initiative, a new kind of working group that will concentrate on the application of the consortium's existing recommendations for Web content written for mobile devices.

If you think "cross-browser" is hard, talk to a mobile web developer and be prepared for them to laugh at you. We get to deal with cross-browser, cross-device, cross-network, and then compound that by the handful of new devices that are released every week, stir, rinse, repeat.
Hopefully some great standard will appear soon that will be so amazing that carriers, manufacturers, customers, and developers will all agree to use it. Until then, I lover WURFL.
